May 4 1984 , Nashville'sJim Deshaies pitched the firstno-hitter in franchise history in the second game of a seven-inning Doubleheader against theColumbus Astros , a 5–1 victory. Knoxville Blue Jays . The team started the second half slowly with a 3–10 record. Falling as low as nine games below .500, Nashville eventually worked its way to the top of the standings and had a three game lead with 13 left to play. Then, with only three games left in the season, they dropped down to third place after going 2–11. The Sounds faced elimination against theMemphis Chicks in the next-to-last game of the season. Going into the ninth inning, Nashville held a 4–2 lead. The Chicks then drew three walks and a single, and Nashville committed an error, giving the Chicks three runs and a 5–4 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Nashville'sErik Peterson scored a two-out, two-run double to record the win. The next night, they defeated theBirmingham Barons in a 7–1 victory which included five Sounds home runs—three byDan Pasqua —to tie for first place.
