1968 ) is a Tony-nominated lyricist who collabrates withAlan Menken and othermusical theatre composers.Slater was born in
Brooklyn ,New York , but was raised in East Brunswick, New Jersey. In 2000, he graduated atHarvard University and received the ASCAP Foundation's Richard Rodgers New Horizon Award with composerStephen Weiner .His first work with Alan Menken was to write the lyrics for the film "Home on the Range" and the stage production "
Sister Act the Musical ". He worked on the stage adaptation ofDisney 's "The Little Mermaid" as its new lyricist, replacing the animated film's original lyricistHoward Ashman , who died in 1991 fromAIDS . Slater and Menken were nominated for aTony Award for Best Original Score .Slater lives in
New York City with his wife Wendy Leigh Wilf and two sons, Benjamin and Daniel.
