- Junta Grande
The Junta Grande was the executive government in
Argentina , created with the addition of representatives from the provinces of Río de la Plata into thePrimera Junta (First Junta).Origin
The first goal of the Primera Junta created on
May 25 ,1810 during theMay Revolution was to expand political power to the wholeViceroyalty of the Río de la Plata .The reactions from the cities from the interior provinces of the country were not homogeneous. Some supported the Buenos Aires junta, others sought to control their own affairs, and still others continued to recognize the Regency in Spain. Thus in order to avoid "realistas" (people loyal to the Spanish Crown) taking political advantage of such situation, the Junta sent a message to all the viceroyalty's municipal councils ( _es. cabildos) on
May 27 asking them to send representatives to join it.By early December, most delegates had already arrived in Buenos Aires and were asking for their incorporation, which was being held up due to in-fighting between centralists, led by
Mariano Moreno and federalists, led by the Junta's president,Cornelio Saavedra . Saavedra managed to orchestrate Moreno's resignation, and so finally, onDecember 18 ,1810 , the Junta Grande was constituted. It governed until1812 , when it was replaced by the First Triumvirate.
