Samuel Hazard Gillespie Jr. was born in Morristown, New Jersey, (1910) Mr. Gillespie attended Yale College (1932) and Yale Law School (1935). And is best known for his old age (98) and still walking to work every day, also as the former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York.
Early career
During his career he had the distinction of arguing four cases in the United States Supreme Court having gained valuable experience as the principle assistant for 15 years to then United States Solicitor General John W. Davis. He served as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York under the Dwight D. Eisenhower Administration. At one point in his career he represented a number of actors and actresses including Mary Pickford and Maurice Chevalier.
Mr. Gillespie is senior counsel at Davis Polk & Wardwell in New York City and has been a member of the firm since 1948. He was President of the New York State Bar Association.
Gillespie is a member: The Association of the Bar of the City of New York; New York State (President, 1958-1959), Federal and American Bar Associations; New York County Lawyers Association; American Judicature Society, and the Council on Foreign Relations and a member of the Skull & Bones society at Yale.
Present
He now serves as Chairman of the American Skin Association. A member of the Piermont Public Library Board of directors. Mr. Gillespie is President of the Tappan Zee Preservation Coalition, Inc.
