Krishan Kant (
February 28 ,1927 -July 27 ,2002 ) was the vice-president ofIndia from 1997 until his death.Kant was born in
Amritsar . He took part in the Indian independence movement as a youth and continued to be involved in politics, eventually being elected to Parliament. He served asgovernor ofAndhra Pradesh from 1990 to 1997, becoming one of India's longest-serving governors.He withMadhu Limaye was also responsible for the collapse of theMorarji Desai government installed by that coalition, by insisting that no member of the Janata party could simultaneously be a member of an alternative social or political organisation. This attack on "dual membership" was directed specifically at members of the Janata party who had been members of theJan Sangh , and continued to be members of the right-wingRashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh , the Jan Sangh's ideological parent.
