synonyms =The Central African Red Colobus ("Piliocolobus foai") is an
Old World monkey in theCercopithecidae family. It is found humid forests in theDemocratic Republic of Congo , theRepublic of the Congo , theCentral African Republic , andSudan .Taxonomy
The
taxonomy is potentially confusing. "Piliocolobus foai" has, together with all otherred colobus es, been considered asubspecies of "Piliocolobus badius ". [cite book |author=Rowe, N. |year=1996 |title=The Pictorial Guide to the Living Primates |publisher=Pogonia Press, Charlestown, Rhode Island |isbn=0-9648825-0-7] When considered a separate species, thescientific name "Piliocolobus oustaleti" (Trouessart , 1906) has been used for the Central African Red Colobus,cite book |author=Kingdon, J. |year=1997 |title=The Kingdon Guide to African Mammals |publisher=Academic Press Limited, London |isbn=0-12-408355-2] but this is incorrect, as thetaxon "foai" precedes "oustaleti" by 7 years. Additionally, the taxon "tephrosceles" has been considered a subspecies of the Central African Red Colobus, but following Groves (2001) it is here recognized as a separate species, theUgandan Red Colobus . As presently defined, the Central African Red Colobus has 5 subspecies, although these are variable and hard to separate:* "
Piliocolobus foai foai "
* "Piliocolobus foai ellioti "
* "Piliocolobus foai oustaleti "
* "Piliocolobus foai semlikiensis "
* "Piliocolobus foai parmentierorum "References
