Koodo Mobile is a discount mobile brand in Canada owned by TELUS. In contrast with traditional "free phone" contracts Koodo uses a "pay as you go" concept for subsidized phones. It was launched in 2008. Its advertising consists of television and billboards on which they advertise people "exercising" by texting and calling. Television advertisements spoof the popular 20 Minute Workout and Tony Little's infomercials. [ [http://mobilesyrup.com/2008/04/18/3-funny-koodo-mobile-commercials/ Koodo commercials] ] The common theme is "Drop that System Access Fee".

History

Koodo Mobile was launched in Canada in Early 2008 by TELUS as a discount service provider.

Payment Plan

Koodo requires no contracts to sign. Its payment plan offers the client an incentive to pay off their phone purchase quicker through increased usage. [ [https://shop.koodomobile.com/plans/ready-made-combos/index.html shop.koodomobile.com] ] The plan is structured so that every billing cycle 10% of the total, less taxes and various charges, is applied towards the phone purchase price. Once the phone is paid off the client can then accumulate that 10% monthly increment towards the purchase of a new phone. However, the accumulated credit or "tab" only applies up to $150 of the price for the next phone as set by the company. A credit check is necessary prior to the issuance of a 'tab' and when a customer wishes to end their use of the service, they must pay off any remaining amount of an unpaid phone.

This is in contrast to other cellular providers in Canada who simply bundle the price of the phone purchase into 1, 2 and 3 year contracts or offer the phone to be purchased outright.

Controversy

Koodo changed their rate plans in July 2008 to charge more for unlimited text messaging. The plans originally had Unlimited Text Messaging available for $5/month, [ [http://bestbuy.comparecellular.com/koodo-mobile/rateplans-details-add-ons.asp?l=&RID=67 bestbuy.comparecellular.com] ] but now has changed to Unlimited Text and Picture Messaging for $10/month with no option for just text. [ [https://shop.koodomobile.com/plans/add-ons/index.html shop.koodomobile.com] ] This may be perceived by potential customers as contradictory to the company's initial campaigns, in that the plans were advertised as purely talk and text centric, without "fatty" extras such as video, pictures, mp3s, Internet. etc. [ [http://www.koodomobile.com/en/ab/about.shtml koodomobile.com] ]
