Whickham School

Whickham School and Sports College is a comprehensive school in the north-east of England, near the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. It holds around 1700 pupils between the ages of 11-19 and has 300 members of staff. It offers a range of vocational and traditional qualifications at Key Stage 4 and 5, including GCSE, BTEC and A-Level. It also has the largest Sixth Form in Gateshead. The school has a common uniform policy of shirt and tie.

We organise the care of our students through a year system and there is a very strong emphasis on creating a happy and caring community where students are able to express their talents to the full.

Whilst there is a strong emphasis on academic achievement, extra curricular activities such as sport, drama and community service are highly valued and help to create an environment where students can develop the qualities needed for successful adulthood. Our Sportsmark Gold and Artsmark Gold Awards indicate our commitment to educating the whole child.

Within the Community

It is a well established and well known school within the community and often holds drama events and clubs for younger children in the surrounding area. The local supermarket Somerfield often receives many customers at lunch time from the year 11 and Sixth form students (I would suggest their M&M deals)

Fire

On the 21st of March 2008 (Good Friday), there was a fire which destroyed the staff room, library, 2 music rooms, sixth form common room and study area. It is suspected the cause was arson. Within a month the remains from the fire were knocked down and over a period of time these areas are being rebuilt. It is expected there will be new Sixth Form facilities provided for the next academic year, beginning September 2008. Meanwhile there are some porta-cabins to be used as classrooms which are bein put up and will be ready for September 2008, what a gutter, eh?
