LogMeIn is a suite of software services that provides remote access to computers over the Internet. The various product versions are designed for both end users and professional help desk personnel.

Product Versions

LogMeIn is sold in a number of different product types that have differing features and prices depending on the number of features and the type of access desired.

"LogMeInPro" and "LogMeIn Free" provide end users remote desktop access with optional remote sound, file management, printer access, and online chat features through a web browser. The "LogMeIn Ignition" product is an optional add-on that provides access without a web browser.

"LogMeIn IT Reach" is a system admin tool to help IT professionals maintain computers remotely.

"LogMeIn Rescue" provides professional help desk personnel remote access to fix problems on an end user's desktop machine. The optional "LogMeIn Rescue+Mobile" is an add-on that provides remote support to mobile devices.

"LogMeIn Hamachi" is a separate product that provides remote VPN access. See Hamachi.

"LogMeIn Backup" is a separate product that provides an online backup service.

Technology

LogMeIn remote access products use a proprietary remote desktop protocol that is transmitted via SSL. An SSL certificate is created for each remote desktop and is used for cryptographically secure communications between the remote desktop and the accessing computer. Users access remote desktops using an Internet-based web portal and, optionally, the "LogMeIn Ignition" stand-alone application. The portal also provides status information for the remote computers and, optionally, remote computer management functions.

The service connects the remote desktop and the local computer using SSL over TCP or UDP and utilizing NAT Traversal techniques to achieve peer-to-peer connectivity when available.
