State Highway 1The Hutt Valley Expressway is a 20 km (12 mi) section of State Highway 2, running from the end of the Wellington Urban Motorway at theNgauranga , near Wellington, pastLower Hutt , to theseagull intersection at Fergusson Drive and River Road. The road has two names: Hutt Road from the Ngauranga Interchange to the Petone Overbridge, and Western Hutt Road from the Petone Overbridge to Fergusson Drive.Design
The road is mainly two lanes each way, with a three lane northbound section just south of the Belmont Hills intersectionThe road is dual carriageway, with the exception of a small section between the Petone Overbridge and the
Petone Railway Station .All but two intersections are at-grade, with major ones controlled by traffic lights and minor ones controlled by Give Way and Stop signs. The Petone and Nguaranga interchanges are both grade separated.
Improvements
In recent years, works have been started to improve safety along the road.
The section between the Petone and Normandale Overbridges is currently being improved by the [http://www.transit.govt.nz/projects/d2p Dowse to Petone project] , which will eliminate three sets of traffic lights and replace them with a grade separated roundabout and an overbridge.
Several minor intersections have been improved to prevent traffic turning right into or out of the minor roads, and there are provisions to replace the Melling and Haywards intersections with grade-separated interchanges in the future.
Interchanges
All interchanges are at-grade unless otherwise specified.
