Angelika Film Center

Angelika Film Center is a movie theater chain in the United States that features independent and foreign films. It operates theaters in New York City and Texas.

History

The original Angelika Film Center & Café opened in New York City's Soho district in 1989. The New York Angelika, which is located at the corner of Houston Street and Mercer Street, is the flagship cinema. In 1997 they opened a theater in Houston, Texas. In 2001, an Angelika opened in the Mockingbird Station in Dallas, Texas, and most recently in 2004, an Angelika opened in Plano, Texas. [http://www.angelikafilmcenter.com/about_us.asp ABOUT US] . The Angelika New York has been a hub for independent cinema since it opened. It has six screens, all of which are below ground level, and its ground floor lobby houses a fully operational cafe accessible by peole who do not hold tickets. From 1997 - 2005, the Angelika Film Center was used as the set for "At The Angelika", a weekly TV series distributed by IFC Films. The show to the IFC Center on Sixth Avenue and changed its name to "At the IFC Center" when that venue opened in June 2005.

The Angelika launched a blog where they post their own video and written interviews with directors and actors that are involved with the films they show.

The Angelika Film Center is owned by Reading Entertainment and iDNA, Inc.

In popular culture

*Central Perk, the fictional Manhattan coffee house used as the regular meeting place for the main characters in the 1994–2004 NBC sitcom "Friends", is down the block from the New York Angelika, as mentioned by the characters in the opening teaser of "The One Where Ross Hugs Rachel", the sixth season's second episode, which aired in September 1999.
