Bhairavnath Battalion

Bhairavnath Battalion

The Bhairavnath Battalion was an Army Battalion in the Royal Nepalese Army specially designated to launch extra-judicial detention and murder of suspected Maoist elements. It was Commanded by the notoriously sadist Colonel Bhanu Pratap Bahadur Chhetri , who had lost his elder brother , a Police Officer , in an assassination carried out by the Maoists in 1998. It is estimated that more than 2000 people were extra-judiciously killed in the torture camps run by the Bhairavnath Battalion in and around the Kathmandu District. The Battalion's Commanding Officer was Colonel Chhetri for almost 7 years - from 1997 to 2004. The Battalion was dissolved in 2007 , and Colonel Chhetri is standing in Court-Martial for alleged crimes against humanity.
