:"For the New York City-based garage rock band formed in 1966, see The Godz (NYC band). For other uses, see The Godz (disambiguation)."

The Godz were a 1970s American hard rock group from Columbus, Ohio.

History

Formed in 1976, the band conceived the band name only to later learn of a band from New York City already known as The Godz. A monetary settlement allowed them to keep their name. Eric Moore and Mark Chatfield wrote The Godz’s cult classics "Snakin'", "Go Away", "Baby, I Love You", "Gotta Muv", "Hey Mama", the radio staple, "Gotta Keep A' Runnin'" and did the best cover tune of the era in polishing up Golden Earring's "Candy's Going Bad". Rhythm guitarist Bob Hill wrote and sang lead on "Festyvul Seasun". Drummer Glen Cataline wrote and sang the songs "Guaranteed", "Luv Kaj", and the live favorite, "714", an homage to another 1970s great, the Quaalude. Mark Chatfield, co-founder of the band, wrote and sang hits such as "Cross Country", "I'll Bi Yer Luv", and "Rock Yer Sox Auf". The band blasted the songs out with energy and ferocity for their devoted throes of fans in the Midwest and beyond, but Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, and Pennsylvania in particular. The crowds drawn in Columbus and Cleveland are unrivaled for "legendary, local" bands.

The Godz opened for Kiss alongside Cheap Trick in 1977. The band released its first, eponymous, self-titled album the next year on Millennium Records. In addition to being on the Love Gun Tour, they toured on what was billed the Heaven and Hell Tour by embarking on the road with Angel. Their second album, "Nothing is Sacred", appeared on Casablanca Records a year later, but commercial success eluded them.

Whatever the group's merits, The Godz went unappreciated by rock critics; the 1983 "Rolling Stone Record Guide" described them as a "Miserable hard-rock quartet from Columbus, Ohio, epitomiz [ing] the most wretched excesses of Seventies rock," and rated both their first two albums as "Worthless".

As of 2006 The Godz remain extant, with Eric Moore still fronting the band on vocals and guitar, Nikki Storm on lead guitar, Ronnie Hughes on second lead, Bub Adams on bass guitar, and skinmaster Keith Pickens keeping the beat.
