- Gustav Bernroider
Gustav Bernroider is an Austrian biologist who has made contributions in the fields of
neurobiology ,philosophy , andquantum mind . [ [http://www.polimetrica.eu/site/?p=58 The Language of Science / Consciousness (Gustav Bernroider) ] ]Bernroider is currently Associate Professor for Neurobiology, at the
University of Salzburg inAustria . He leads a research lab forneurosignaling andneurodynamics studies that focuses onneural correlates ofhigher level brain functions .Among others, he has suggested that brain research requires an interactionistic view combining the brains physical states with the
phenomenology of mind. [ [http://www.scipress.org/journals/forma/pdf/1401/14010185.pdf Bernroider 1999a] ] He endorses the hypothesis that the mind-brain interface is physically instantiated at the quantum scale [ [http://www.research.sbg.ac.at/neurodynamics/Papers/Forma_B&R_2004.pdf Bernroider 2004a] ] and has published his concepts in a series of papers since the mid 1990s. Bernroider assumes that the contents of consciousness is purely perceptual. It is a perceptual phenomenon that, in the brain, pertains only to sensory systems. As it is hard to believe in 'magical'emergence , it is argued that one cannot expect that the ‘experiential’ contents of consciousness ‘arises’ from something which is entirely non-experiential. So the notion of asensory system bearing the ‘seeds of experiential contents’ will reflect a very widely distributed instantiation, building on real 'actual entities' as suggested byAlfred North Whitehead or anticipated by the notion of apsychon as a mental unit bySir John Eccles . At present Bernroiders work focuses on the question of macroscopically detectableentanglement witness states of quantum correlations within ion channel proteins of nerve cell membranes at warm temperatures [ [http://www.research.sbg.ac.at/neurodynamics/Papers/SPIE_05.pdf Bernroider, Quantum entanglement of K+ions] ] .
