publisher=Blackpool Council] The pier originally included 36 shops, a bandstand, an ice-cream vendor and a photograph stall. On 20 May 1893, the Grand Pavilion was opened, with a capacity of 3000. In 1938, the entrance to the pier was widened, and the Regal Pavilion was created. This was converted into an amusement arcade in 1963.
=DaThe pier has suffered damage over the years. In 1958, a fire damaged the Grand Pavilion, followed by a further fire in 1964 which completely destroyed the pavilion. It was replaced with a theatre. This theatre has since been demolished and replaced by a ride in 1998.
