51SIM Social Innovation and Music Festival

The 51SIM (Social Innovation Movement) (Chinese: 51SIM) is a charity organization in China.

51SIM is a Corporate Social Responsibility alliance under the aegis of the China Social Benefit and Education Charity. It was launched by the CSR departments of Beijing New Postcom Equipment Co. Ltd, 51Give, Camco, and ClearWorld Energy. The 51SIM alliance is an open-membership organization that seeks to organize the efforts of like-minded CSR departments for the following goals:

#Fund sustainable development projects proposed by schools, hospitals, and other non-profit organizations.
#Enable the education and involvement of Chinese youth in sustainable projects.
#Encourage companies operating in China to support sustainable development in China through their Corporate Social Responsibility departments.

51SIM took an active part in the China International Youth Arts Week, which was held in the first week of July 2008. 51SIM helped to organize a special production of the Closing Ceremony for the festival. The ceremony, hosted by 51SIM, CICCC and CCTV 4 was filmed at the Great Hall of the People to an audience of 6,000 guests. The show’s environmental theme was endorsed by famous Asian rockstar and 51SIM’s Goodwill Ambassador Qi Qin (Chyi Chin) who has worked on environmental awareness programs in China with the United Nations since 2003, and the internationally acclaimed and award winning Chinese film actress and singer Zhou Xun, who is also the first United Nations Development Programme Goodwill Ambassador for China.

The show included audio-visual content from Sebastian Copeland’s “Antarctica: The Global Warning”, part of the Green Cross International / Global Green climate change initiative and live musical performances by world renowned pianist Kong Xiang Dong including his Olympics song ‘Forever Friends’ written with 3 times Oscar winner and 2 times Olympic song composer Giorgio Moroder; musical therapy innovator and multi-Emmy Award winner Gary Malkin and Peking opera superstar Li Yugang. The show will be broadcast in 68 countries during August and September 2008 on CCTV4.

According to Hiu Ng, co-founder of 51SIM and 51Give, “We plan to continue the 51SIM Festival annually and by blending music, film and speakers become more impactful each year. 51SIM is passionate about spreading social innovation in China. We are excited this year to focus on carbon assessment and offsetting and we hope to drive a new trend in China."

Prior to the Closing Ceremony, 51SIM hosted the “La Boum de Luxe" Club night on July 12th, 2008. The event featured a host of International DJs, Pop stars and artists from Austria, Switzerland, Dubai and China, trying to spread innovation through the medium of sound.

All proceeds from the event went towards rebuilding disaster struck schools in Sichuan province.

Social innovation can be defined as any idea, concept, entrepreneurship or organization with a social purpose. Examples of social innovation are microfinance, environmentally friendly development, educational plans and harmonious society programs.”
