Stjepan Svetoslavić

Stjepan Svetoslavić

Stjepan was a son of Croatian King Svetoslav Suronja, member of Trpimirović dinasty.

As his father was allied with Venetian Republic in Croatian civil wars and Croatian-Bulgarian wars, as well as in campaign of Pietro Orseolo II against Croatia in 1000, it was decided to strengthen those bonds even more.
Consequentially, Stjepan married the daughter of Venetian Doge Pietro Orseolo II, Joscella (Hicela) Orseolo, as a part of the agreement made at the meeting of Pietro Orseolo II and Svetoslav Suronja, held in Croatian city of Trogir, at the time under Venetian control.

After the coup d'état in Venice, Svetoslav Suronja and his family went to Hungary in exile and died.
In 1020, king Krešimir killed Stjepan's uncle Gojslav, the Pope's investigation [...audivit de Cressimiro Chroatorum principe quod dolo necari fecisset Goislavum fratrem suum misso apocrisario Mainardo...] of the murder turned Croatia into an anarchy.
Stjepan used that anarchy and made a conquest in Croatian Slavonia with Hungarians against the fratricide king. Stjepan later received the title Ban of Slavonia.
His descendant, Dmitar Zvonimir, will later become the Croatian king in 1074.
