Sammy Seminole [http://fpc.dos.state.fl.us/reference/rc01465.jpgphoto] was one of only two mascots of the Florida State Seminoles from 1958 to 1972. Originally introduced at the FSU homecoming event, PowWow in 1958 Sammy was portrayed by a Florida State undergraduate students during the school years. [http://unirel.fsu.edu/seminoles/pages/timeline.html] undergraduate students who dressed in faux Native American garb. In 1972 Sammy Seminole was retired at the request of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.

The university's basketball mascot at the time was called Chief Fullabull. [http://www.bluecorncomics.com/seminole.htm]

In 1978, Chief Osceola and Renegade were added as the university's new mascots/symbols.In 1978, student Jack Kidder made his way onto the football field upon his horse. The symbol of Chief Osceola and Renegade grew into an iconic tradition supported by the Seminole Tribe. Chief Osceola's authentic regalia is designed by women of the Seminole tribe each year.
