Mihai Suba (born
June 1 ,1947 inBucharest ,Romania ) is a Romanian chess Grandmaster.FIDE awarded him theInternational Master title in 1975 and theInternational Grandmaster title in 1978. He won theRomanian Chess Championship in 1980, 1981 and 1986. He first came to wide attention in 1982 when he finished equal second withGyula Sax , afterZoltan Ribli , atBaile Herculane . At the 1982Las Palmas Interzonal he finished third, behind Ribli and former World ChampionVasily Smyslov , just missing qualification for theCandidates Matches . Suba finished first atDortmund 1983, and equal first atPrague 1985 andTimişoara 1987. In August 1988, he sought political asylum in Britain, and he played for England at the 1989European Team Championship . However, FIDE currently lists him as a Romanian player.
