Ephimeris

The "Ephimeris" ( _gr. Εφημερίς, "newspaper") was the name of the first Greek newspapers printed in the late 18th century in Vienna.

The first was published by the scholar Georgios Vendotis in Vienna from June 1784. Vendotis published eight issues until the paper was closed down after only two months by the Austrian authorities at the behest of the Ottomans. No example of Vendotis' "Ephimeris" survives.

In 1790 the Poulios brothers, Poulios Markidis and Georgios from Siatista, restarted publication in the Greek, Serbian, and German languages, after negotiating a license from the Austrian government. The newspaper published the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen in serials, as well as several works by Rigas Feraios. The newspaper's run lasted until 1797, when Georgios Pouliou was arrested together with Rigas Feraios for their publication of "revolutionary and godless" works, and the paper was shut down in January 1798.

Many of its original issues can be seen in various public libraries in Greece, and in 200, the Academy of Athens reprinted a collected edition of the newspaper.
