Fred G. "Steamer" Maxwell (
May 19 1890 inWinnipeg, Manitoba -September 11 ,1975 ) was a Canadianamateur ice hockey defenseman who played for theWinnipeg Monarchs . He led the Monarchs to the 1915Allan Cup . Maxwell played with theWinnipeg Falcons , winning agold medal at the1920 Summer Olympics .Steamer, though offered many opportunities to play
professional hockey, was one of the best players of his day. He always turned down professional opportunities because he wanted to remain an amateur.
