The 5th Cavalry Brigade, was a part of the British Army , it served in both world wars in World War One it was part of the 2nd Cavalry Division, and during the Second World War it was formed in 1939 from Yeomanry Regiments and part of the 1st Cavalry Division.
History in World War Two
As the only British Cavalry unit during the War, this formation was sent in January 1940 to the Middle East as a garrison and occupation force.
On 1 August 1941 the division was converted to the 10th Armoured Division and the Brigade units were split up.
*The Yorkshire Draggoons had the distnction of being the last active Cavalry unit of the British Army , then had a number of different roles Anti-Tank Artillery during the battle of El Alamein , then converted into a Infantry unit part of 18th Infantry Brigade.
*The Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry converted into an Artillery Regiment and Fought with the 8th Armoured Brigade
*The Yorkshire Hussars converted into an Armoured Regiment and Fought with the 9th Armoured Brigade and the the Divisional Reconnaissance Regiment for the 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry Division.
