Kinneret ( _he. כנרת) is a village or
moshava on the southwestern shore of theSea of Galilee inIsrael . Located in the north of the Jordan Valley, 6 kilometers southern ofTiberias , it falls under the jurisdiction ofEmek HaYarden Regional Council . The village sits at around 185 meters below sea level, and in 2006 it had a population of 510.The village was established as a colony in the year 1908 by the
Jewish Colonization Association and took its name from the ancient Hebrew name of theSea of Galilee . In its early years it was settled by local farmers from the surrounding villages, after a few years young pioneers. The original Jewish settlers stayed in the Khans of local Arab villages.
