Leo H. Fischer (
September 20 ,1897 -October 1970) was a sports editor.Fischer was born in
Chicago . His parents were Abraham and Anna (Silverberg) Fischer. Fischer studied atNorthwestern University from 1921-1923. He married Margaret MacLean on June 20, 1926. There children were Barbara (Mrs. William Swisher), Nancy (Mrs. John W. Gwynne, Jr.).Fischer was a sports writer for the "Chicago Examiner", the "Herald Examiner", "Chicago Journal" and the "
Chicago's American ". He was the sports editor for "Chicago's American" from 1943-1969. In 1969 he served as the sports editor for "Chicago Today American".Founder and president of the
Amateur Softball Association from 1930-1938. He then served as president of theNational Professional Basketball League from 1940-1944.He was a Trustee of the
National Hemophilia Foundation . He also served as a director ofLaRabida Jackson Park Sanitarium . He was a trustee ofIllinois Masonic Hospital .Fischer served in the
United States Navy from 1917-1919.He began his news career as editor of the "Great Lakes Bulletin" in 1918. He served with
Illinois National Guard from 1919-1920. He then was in thelst U.S. Army Reserve from 1920-1927.Fischer was a recipient of the
U.S.O. citation for veterans recreational services in 1944. citation, Back of Yards Council, 1953; named Press Veteran of the Year, 1963; Chicago Sportsman of the Year, 1968.
