- Jack Rickard
Jack Rickard (1922-1983) was an illustrator who worked in many media, including a lengthy stint at "MAD Magazine" and numerous advertising campaigns.
Jack won an art scholarship to the Rochester Institute of Technology. He subsequently worked at
Charlton Comics , and as an assistant on the "Li'l Abner " comic strip. Soon after, he became a mainstay in the advertising field, where his work was noticed by MAD & began illustrating for the magazine in 1961. Most notably, Rickard became the main replacement as illustrator for the covers for Mad after the death ofNorman Mingo in 1980, until his own death three years later."I think of all the artists we've had," said MAD editor
Nick Meglin , "we miss Jack the most. Jack had so many styles, such a total command of all techniques. He was especially useful when we wanted something to have a real rounded, 3-D look to it."Rickard's style was in demand for movie promotions. Jack did the poster art for two
Sidney Poitier movies "Uptown Saturday Night " and "Let's Do It Again", and for the 1974Peter Sellers movie "Soft Beds, Hard Battles " (also known as "Party for Hitler " and "Undercovers Hero "). He drew both the original movie poster forBob & Carol & Ted & Alice , and its parody on the cover of MAD #137.He has two brothers, Robert and Jerome "Bud" & a sister Joan.
