- Israel Moore Foster
Israel Moore Foster (1873-1950) was a Republican Representative in the
United States Congress from the State ofOhio He was born in
Athens, Ohio , onJanuary 12 , 1873. After graduating from theOhio University in 1895, he studied law at theHarvard Law School in 1895 and 1896 before graduating from the Ohio State Law School in 1898.He practiced law in
Athens, Ohio and became the prosecuting attorney ofAthens County from 1902 to 1910. He also served as a member and secretary of the board of trustees of theOhio University for 24 years and was the secretary of the Republican State Central Committee in 1912.He was elected to Congress in 1918 and served for three terms before failing to be renominated in 1924. While in Congress, he is best known for proposing the
Child Labor Amendment to theUnited States Constitution .After serving in Congress, he was appointed a commissioner of claims and served until 1942, when he retired. He died in
Washington, D.C. onJune 10 ,1950 and is buried inRock Creek Cemetery .
