James Litton

James Litton directed the American Boychoir from 1986 to 2001 and is widely recognized as one of the leading choral conductors of the day.

Early career

Prior to his appointment at The American Boychoir School, James Litton held positions at Westminster Choir College, Princeton Theological Seminary, Virginia Theological Seminary and The University of the South. He was also the Organist and Director of Music at St. Bartholomew's Church in New York City, where he now serves as Artistic Consultant.

A former member of the Episcopal Church's Standing Commission on Church Music, he played a leading role in the creation of the The Hymnal 1982, which serves as the standard hymnal in thousands of Episcopal Churches across the country.

American Boychoir

James Litton joined the American Boychoir School in 1986 and served as Director of Music until 2001. During his 14-year tenure, he conducted the choir in 49 states and 12 nations in more than 2,000 concerts, and conducted on more than 40 recording. He currently serves as Music Director Emeritus and Director of the Alumni Chorus at the school.

Retirement

In his retirement, he served as Interim Choirmaster at Washington National Cathedral from 2001 to 2003. Previously, Litton had served at Christ Church Cathedral, Indianapolis; Trinity Church, Princeton; and Saint Bartholomew's Church, New York.

Litton has also recently returned to serve as Music Director Emeritus and also the Director of the Alumni Chorus at the American Boychoir School.
