Meiafarakin

Meiafarakin

Meiafarakin is a city in modern Turkey, known in Turkish as Silvan. It is located in the Kurdish Mountains. [ [http://users.sbuniv.edu/~hgallatin/ht3463le18.html Christian History Handbook: Ancient: Lecture Eighteen ] ]

Prior to about AD 400 it was known as Maipherqat (Maypherkat). However in that year its bishop, Marutha of Martyropolis, brought a large number of relics back from Persia. These were the relics of the Persian martyrs from the persecution of Christians in that empire that had barely ended at this point. For this reason it was renamed Martyropolis.
