George Edwards (born 2 December 1920 in Treherbert) is a former Welsh professional footballer and Wales international.

Career

Edwards originally began his career at Swansea Town as an amateur and made his debut at the end of the 1938-39 season prior to the outbreak of World War II. During the start of the war he was studying for a degree at Swansea university while also still playing for Swansea Town. He was called up to serve in the RAF and was stationed in the Midlands, guesting for Coventry City on a number of occasions.

At the end of the war, he signed for Birmingham City where he played until 1948 before returning to Wales to sign for Cardiff City for £12,000. He made his debut in a 2-2 draw with Leicester City before scoring on his home debut in a 6-1 victory over Bradford Park Avenue. He helped the Bluebirds to promotion during the 1951-52 season and began forming a partnership with striker Wilf Grant. He decided to retire in 1955 while still first choice for Cardiff. Following his retirement, he became a journalist and was eventually offered a position on the Cardiff board, a position he went on to hold for nearly thirty years.

Edwards won a total of twelve caps for Wales during his career, making his debut in October 1946 during a 3-1 victory over Scotland.
