Tarn Taran Sahib is the district headquarters and a municipal council in Taran Taran district in the Indian state of Punjab.

Tarn Taran Sahib has a population of nearly 100,000 and is situated near the district of Amritsar, in the state of Punjab, India. It sends one elected representative to Lok Sabha (the Indian parliament), one member to the State Legislative Assembly and two members to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee, Amritsar. It has a District headquarters and a Municipal Council with 19 Municipal counsellors. Tarn Taran borders Doaba, Malwa Belt and Pakistan. Historically, Tarn Taran has much importance.

Tarn Taran has many Gurdwaras, which include Sri Darbar Sahib Tarn Taran Sahib, Gurdwara Guru Ka Khuh, Gurdwara Bibi Bhani Da Khuh, Gurdwara Takkar Sāhib, Gurdwarā Lakeer Sāhib, Gurdwarā Jhūlnā Mahal, Thattī Khārā. The main religious hub at Sri Tarn Taran Sahib is Sri Darbar Sahib Tarn Taran, of Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji, the fifth Guru of Sikhs. Actually, the city of Tarn Taran was founded by Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji and fifth master himself named the city as Tarn Taran. Sri Darbar Sahib has a Big sarivar (holy water reservoir). The Sikh body Shiromani Gurdwara Parbhandhak Committee manages the affairs of Sri Darbar Sahib, Tarn Taran. It appoints a Manager to manage the affairs. The Sikhs of Tarn Taran elects two members for General House of S.G.P.C. for five years term.

Gurdwara Bibi Bhani da Khuh is another historic and religious place in Tarn Taran sahib. It is a holy water well in the name of Bibi Bhani Ji, who was the daughter of Sri Guru Amar Dass ji (Third Guru of Sikhs) and the wife of Sri Guru Ramdass ji (fourth guru of Sikhs) and the mother of Sri Guru Arjan Dev ji. This religio-historic well was dug by Guru Arjan Dev Ji in memory of his mother at the place where Mata Bibi Bhani Ji used to serve food, water, and medicine to needy and visiting pilgrims. The presence and importance of Bibi Bhani da Khuh was brought to the attention of the S.G.P.C., Amritsar and Sikh Gurdwara Judicial Commission at Amritsar several times by the President of All India Sikh Students Federation. Bibi Bhani Da Khuh is on property owned by Bibi Shivdarshan Kaur, who in 2006 finally agreed to preserve the place of Bibi Bhani ji and build a Gurdwara at the spot. Today, a Gurdwara has been built at the Khuh and it has been preserved in its original form.

Gurdwara Guru Ka Khuh is also situated within circles of Tarn Taran City. This Khuh Belonged to Guru Arjan Dev Ji, a historic Gurdwara is situated at this place. Other Gurdwaras in District Tarn Taran are at Goīndwāl Sahib namely Gurdwara Baoli Sahib, at Khadoor Sāhib, at Bābā Buddhā Sāhib (Bir Sāhib) and those of historic places at Amritsar make the Majha belt a historic Sikh centre of gathering and interest. Epi Centre of Kar Sewa (holy service) namely, Dera Kar Sewa Baba Jiwan Singh ji, runs at Goindwal Sahib Road, Tarn Taran. Goindwal Sahib is the core place of Sikhism, as Guru Arjan Dev ji was born here. Goindwal Sahib is 23 kilometres from Tarn Taran. It is situated along the river Beas.

Tarn Taran was famous as the hotbed of Sikh extremist militancy during the 1980s and early 1990s. During militancy times it was said that Tarn Taran will be the upcoming Capital of Khalistan, the Sikh independent nation. During Indo-Pak partition, Tarn Taran was the only Tehsil in Punjab with majority of Sikh population. The main occupation in this area used to be agriculture. Tarn Taran has been declared as a district of State of Punjab a few years ago, the declaration to this effect was made by His excellency Captain Amrinder Singh, Ex-Chief Minister of Punjab on occasion of during the celebrations marking the martyrdom day of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji . With this, it became the 19th district of Punjab.
