Robert M'Gowan Barrington-Ward DSO MC (1891-
29 February 1948 ) was an Englishbarrister andjournalist who served with distinction in theBritish Army inWorld War I and who went on to becomeeditor of "The Times ".Robert was the fourth son of the rev. Canon Barrington-Ward,
rector ofDuloe, Cornwall . His brother wasFrederick Temple Barrington-Ward , himself a leading barrister. He was educated atWestminster School andBalliol College, Oxford , where he was president of theOxford Union Society , and graduated MA. He enteredLincoln's Inn in 1911 and wascalled to the Bar . He became editorial secretary at "The Times" in 1913 but, at the start of World War I, joined theDuke of Cornwall's Light Infantry , serving inFrance andBelgium and beingmentioned in despatches three times and awarded theDistinguished Service Order andMilitary Cross .
