"The Night Watchman" is a Merrie Melodies cartoon released to theaters on November 19, 1938.

Synopsis

The watchman gets sick, so his son is enlisted to watch the kitchen. When the gangland-style mice find out that he's the one on duty, they try to take over.

Voice cast

* Mel Blanc as Hoodlum Mice
* Bernice Hansen as Tommy Cat

Trivia

* Chuck Jones' first Warner Bros. shot as a director. In his new role, he timed the picture, finalized all the writing, produced over 300 layouts, and directed the art design, music, sound effects and animation.
* Up to 5,000 animation drawings were used for this cartoon.
* For the so called "dubbed version" created by Turner, recreated Blue Ribbon title cards were made for this cartoon (see [http://looney.goldenagecartoons.com/miscelooneyous/blueribbon/blueribbon3.html this page] for more details). For the 2006 DVD release, the original title cards were found for this cartoon. It is not certain what the intention of the editors was.
*Contrary to the general trend of Warner Bros. cartoons, a cat is depicted here as the hero and the mice as the villains instead of vice versa (see also "Ain't We Got Fun").

Censorship

*When this cartoon aired on the now defunct WB! channel as part of the Kids WB! line-up, the part where Tommy Cat punches the gangland mice was cut short.
