The vessel was one of the last of the 15 Swedish monitors to be built for use by the Swedish Navy, cite journal|title=The Sölve monitor|journal=Maritiman marine museum pamphlet|date=undated|first=|last=|coauthors=|volume=|issue=|pages=|id= |url=http://bencourtney.com/maritiman/maritiman_pamphlet.gif|format=|accessdate=2008-04-08 ] and was named for Sölve, a semi-legendary King of Sweden.
