Balfour, Aberdeenshire

Balfour, Aberdeenshire is a settlement in Aberdeenshire, Scotland situated along the Royal Deeside. [United Kingdom Ordnance Survey Map Landranger 45, Stonehaven and Banchory, 1:50,000 scale, 2004] The Dee River is situated to the north of Balfour.

Early vicinity history

Roman legions marched from Raedykes to Normandykes Roman Camp through the Durris Forest not far from balfour as they sought higher ground evading the bogs of Red Moss and other low-lying areas associated with the Burn of Muchalls. That march used the Elsick Mounth, one of the ancient trackways crossing the Mounth of the Grampian Mountains, [ [http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=18037 C. Michael Hogan, "Elsick Mounth", Megalithic Portal, editor: Andy Burnham] ] lying west of Netherley. The important Mesolithic settlement of Balbridie is located in the general vicinity.
