Tanganyika was before the First World War under the rule of German East Africa. After the war broke out, the British invaded the German territory, however it would show to be much more diffuclt to conquer than in other colonial theaters. The Germans at East Africa would not surrender until the German Empire had lost the war in Europe. After this the League of Nations Mandate gave control of the area to the United Kingdom who named their part of the earlier German area Tanganyika Territory.
