Ian Clarke (born February 4th, 1964 in Broadstairs, Kent, UK) is a British

Clarke studied music at the
Guildhall School of Music and Drama and concurrently studied Mathematics atImperial College , graduating with Honours.He has performed as a guest soloist for the
British Flute Society and made his international debut in 2001 as guest soloist at theNational Flute Association ’s "International Flute Convention" in Dallas. Clarke was the guest artist at the 2003 Hungarian National Flute Event and a headline artist in the 2005 NFA convention in San Diego. Further USA tours were made in 2006 and 2007.Ian is currently professor of flute at the
Guildhall School of Music and Drama and has given masterclasses at theRoyal Academy of Music , theRoyal Scottish Academy , andTrinity College of Music and has lead workshops forFlutewise .In 2005, he released the CD "Within…", on which he performs several of his own compositions.
Composition
Clarke has composed chamber works for solo flute, for flute and piano and for "flute choir". His composing makes much use of extended techniques - jet whistles, timbral trills, alternative fingerings, and simultaneous singing and playing. His has also collaborated with musician and composer
Simon Painter writing, producing and performing music for film and television under the name Diva Music.He came to greater public attention in the UK when flautist David Smith chose to perform Clarke's composition "Zoom Tube" [ [http://www.bbc.co.uk/youngmusician/sites/contestants/pages/david_smith.shtml David Smith at BBC Young Musician of the Year 2008] ] in the woodwind finals of the 2008
