Overview

The Plowright theatre was commissioned by the former Scunthorpe Borough Council and built by J. W. Taylor in 1958. It is a traditional proscenium style theatre, with a seating capacity of 354 patrons and it was originally known as "Scunthorpe Civic Theatre". In the 1990s the theatre was renamed the "Plowright Theatre" in recognition of the achievements of local actress Joan Plowright. Plowright was born in Brigg, was educated in Scunthorpe and is currently the President of Scunthorpe Little Theatre Club, which was founded by her father Bill Plowright and which staged the theatre's first performance, Peer Gynt, in 1958.

On 10th March 2008, all previous box office records at the theatre were broken, after tickets for the comedian Lee Evans (comedian) became the fastest sell-out in the theatre's history. The local newspaper reported that a queues had formed at the box office at 6am in the morning, and that all tickets sold out within 65 minuteds after the box office opened at 10.30am. The performance on was due to be a warm-up act prior to Evans' 2008 tour, however a second date in Scunthorpe is being considered by the tour organisers.
