OBE (born21 May 1949 ) is an Englishopera singer who spent much of her career as asoprano but later returned to the stage inmezzo-soprano roles.Life and career
Rosalind Plowright was born in
Worksop and studied at theRoyal Northern College of Music inManchester and at theLondon Opera Centre .Early career

Don Giovanni " and the Countess in "The Marriage of Figaro " with the Glyndebourne Touring Opera in 1976 and 1977. Also in 1975, she appeared with bothWelsh National Opera andEnglish National Opera as the Page in "Salome ". She then appeared with ENO in the roles ofTosca , Elisabeth de Valois in "Don Carlos ", Miss Jessel in "The Turn of the Screw", Hélène inVerdi 's "Les vêpres siciliennes ", andElizabeth I inDonizetti 's "Maria Stuarda ". Her recording of the last of these roles, withJanet Baker as Mary, Queen of Scots, brought her wider recognition. Frankfurt , Ariadne inBerne and Ortlinde at theRoyal Opera House . Her American debut was atSan Diego as Medora in the United States premiere of Verdi's "Il corsaro ". Her debut at La Scala came in 1983 when she sang Suor Angelica.Since then, she has performed in major
