Guernsey Telecoms

Guernsey Telecoms (GT) was the trading name of the telephone service provided by the States of Guernsey Telecommunications Board, a department of the government of Guernsey.

Guernsey Telecoms was originally founded on 17 June 1896 as the States Telephone Department to "establish, maintain and operate" an independent telephone system for the island which would have a maximum of 400 subscribers. [Guernsey Telecoms: The First 100 Years - States of Guernsey Telecommunications Board 1996] Guernsey, together with Kingston-upon-Hull, was outside the telecommunications monopoly created in the British Isles in 1912 by the General Post Office.

On 1 October 2001 operations were transferred from the States Telecommunications Board to a new corporate structure, Guernsey Telecoms Ltd., in preparation for privatisation.

On 30 May 2002, it was sold to Cable & Wireless in a deal worth £30 million. The telephone kiosks, previously painted yellow with white window frames, were repainted a bright blue colour shortly afterwards.

From 30 September 2002, it was re-branded as Cable & Wireless Guernsey, and has subsequently re-branded as Sure.
