- Polyglycoplex
PolyGlycopleX or PGX is a dietary super fibre discovered at the
University of Toronto by Dr. David Jenkins and his team, who were also responsible for developing theglycemic index . PGX is described as "the most viscous and soluble fibre ever discovered". [Magnan, Michelle, "Sugar cited as key hunger culprit", "Saskatoon Star-Phoenix " 7 March 2008, p.E-8, reprinted from "The Calgary Herald "]Dr.
Michael Lyon claims five grams (3/16 oz) of PGX will absorb one liter (35.2 oz) of water, equal to some five or six times as much usual dietary fibre. [Magnan, p.E-11.]According to Lyon, this amounts to eating more without adding
calorie s, helps regulateappetite , and reduces the absorption ofcarbohydrate s, which lowers the glycemic index [Magnan, p.E-11.] In someone at a healthy weight, notoverweight orobese , it could "virtually eliminate appetite" [Magnan, p.E-11.]Use of such fibre
supplements are commonplace, but requireblood test s to confirm iron andelectrolyte levels are correct, and ensure proper absorption ofprotein s, warnsdietician Kelly Erdman of theUniversity of Calgary 's Sport Medicine Center. [Magnan, p.E-11.] Also, it is necessary to guard againstdehydration . [Magnan, p.E-11.]ources
