Henry de Grey

Henry de Grey was the ancestor of all the English noble houses with the surname Grey or Gray. In 1195 he was granted the manor of Thurrock in Essex which then became known as Grays Thurrock (or simply Grays). He was later granted Grimston in Nottinghamshire.

He married Isolda daughter and heir of of Robert Bardolf of Codnor, Derbyshire, by whom he had six sons:
*Richard Grey, ancestor of the Barons Grey of Codnor.
*Sir John de Grey, ancestor of the Barons Grey de Ruthyn.
*William Grey, a remote ancestor of the Barons Walsingham.
*Robert Grey, ancestor of the Barons Grey of Rotherfield
*Walter Grey, archbishop of York from 1216 to 1255. [Other accounts make the archbishop and the Greys of Rotherfield more distantly related. ]
*Henry Grey
