"Neang Neath" is 2004 Success Cambodian horror film based on the Legendary Khmer folktale that occurred in Battambang province in the late 1800s. The story was told throughout the country in the 1900s. It was never a film in the 20th century nor was it a film during the Khmer golden age of the 1960s,infact, most films of those times were based more on religion. Unfortunately, this film seemingly turned out to be a remake of the Thai 90s film Mae Nak released just 6 years after.

Plot synopsis

The story is about Neang Neath, A beautiful woman who is married to a man named Doan. They are living happily in their small house made from wood. One day Doan have to sell some necklaces in some village with his friend, so he have to leave Neath who now pregnant but he agree with her that he will back before Neath gives birth. As Doan is leaving, Neath is standing on the Bank of the lake, holding a ring which Doan Gave to her before they married.

As many months later, when Neath is Farming, suddenly her belly hurts and she known she is going to give birth. Everyone see her, and they take her to her house, to prepare to give birth. Meanwhile, Doan and his friend have sold all the necklaces and Doan is walking in hurry to his village before Neath gives birth, but on the way home, there are a group of robbers appear in front of them, the robbers tell them to give all their money to them. As Doan disagrees, they get fighting, all of Doan's friends are killed, but Doan get a cut on his chest and falls to the ground. During that, Neath is giving birth, difficultly. She tries and tries, and suddenly a lot of blood comes from Neath, nobody can help her and she drops dead, immediately. The maid who is the old lady in the village, calls everyone to prepare the funeral for Neath. As she see the ring on Neath's finger, she takes it out and keeps it in her skirt's pocket.

After that, Doan who has an injury in his chest, is dreaming about what happened to him in his worst day. As he wakes up, The chief of the monk tell him about how they found him and saved him from the death by their medicine. That night, Neath's ghost comes to maid's house, kills her and takes her ring back from the maid. Many days later, Doan missed his wife and his new son, so he tells the chief of monks that he wants to go home. Before Doan goes back home, The chief of monks tells him about the death and the life that sometime can change without anyone know and give a magic necklace to protect himself from any spirit. As Doan returns home by Boat, he can see a shadow of his wife, holding their baby, waiting him in the bank of the lake. They kiss each other as they miss each other so much. To welcome Doan from his business, Neath make Doan's favourite dish and now they live happily again. But this happily can't stay so long, when every villager see Doan now living with the ghost of Neath. One of them, Come to Doan's house to tell him about Neath is dead and Neath who Doan living with is Ghost. Doan doesn't believe him and think he is a liar, want to separate him from Neath. Then Doan tells that thing to Neath, it makes Neath very angry. To close everyone's mouth, Neath come to their house and kills them. In the morning, the body of victims of Neath's kill, all burned, The survivors from that event, can't stop themselves to destroy Neath, so they invite a famous ghostbuster to get rid her. One evening, Doan is walking around his house to find some woods to fix some part of his house, suddenly he look at the necklace that a chief of monk gave to him. To see the ghost in his house, He follow every words in the necklace as write the cross on his foots and walk around his house for three times.When he finishes doing everything from the necklace, he look to his house and seek where is the ghost. To his shock and horror, he saw his wife, with the creepy face and makes her arm longer to rock the skeleton baby, in the bed. To escape, Doan runs to the pagoda for help. when doan escape, the group of villagers, come to his house and burn it. It makes Neath more angry, Suddenly she appear in front of them and make a big wood fire to kill them all.

Meanwhile Doan is praying in front of the pagoda with a lot of monks around, immediately, Neath appear in front of them, in her body big and tall as the giant, she tells Doan to come back if he loves him but not for long Neaht disappears as she knows that there are a ghostbuster pray to destroy her at her grave. when Doan hears about that news. he runs to Neath's grave to stop the Ghostbuster, but the ghostbuster doesn't stop and tell everyone to take him out. The strong engry don't stonger than Neath's vengeful spirit, Neath possess the ghostbuster and kills him. Suddenly a chief of monk who have helped Doan appears in front of everyone, he sits on the ground and tell neath that he want to talk to her, the Neath's body, get out of the groung and grow biter and biter as herself. The Chief of monk allows Doan to meet Neath at last. Before Neath backs to death, she wishes that she want to live with Doan again in their next life. as they finishes, The chief of monk speaks some Bali Language to make Neath out of Cursed.when Neath back to the body, The chief of monk stands up, give everyone's advice and disappears from there. at the end of the film, Neath's body is burned, and Doan begin to walk in buddha's way as a monk to pray to his honest, perfect and misery wife, Neath, to has a good life in next years than have a misery life.

The Difference between Neang Neath and Nang Nak

*In Nang Nak, when Mak finds out she's the ghost, she makes her arm longer to pick the lemon on the ground but In Neang Neath, Neath make her arm longer to rock her baby.
*In Nang Nak, Mak leaves Nak because he has to fight in the war but in this remake, Doan just leave Neath for his business.

The Similarity of Nang Nak and Neang Neath

In Nang Nak, Nak is the name of the ghost's character but in the remake, Neath is the name of character. As the compare, In Khmer language, Nak and Neath are the same spelling and meaning.
