Barry Albert Kyle (born
25 March 1947 , Bow, East London) is an English theatre director, currently Honorary Associate Director of theRoyal Shakespeare Company , England, and Professor of Theatre Arts at theUniversity of Missouri–Kansas City .Kyle attended Beal Grammar School in Ilford where he showed an early interest in theatre. He then studied drama and English at the
University of Birmingham and began his theatre career in 1969 at theLiverpool Playhouse . In 1973 he became an assistant director at theRoyal Shakespeare Company where he directed in the studio theatre called The Other Place, as well as in the main house in conjunction withTrevor Nunn among others. In 1986 he directed the first production at the RSC’s associated Swan Theatre, "The Two Noble Kinsmen" by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher.In 1991 Kyle moved to the United States, founding the
Swine Palace theatre company atLouisiana State University ,Baton Rouge . While there he also directed in New York ("Henry V", off-Broadway, 1992) and Washington ("Romeo and Juliet", The Shakespeare Theater, 1994). He has also directed in major theatres around the world including Berlin, Hamburg, Melbourne, Moscow, Paris, Prague, Tel Aviv and Warsaw.In 2003 Kyle joined the University of Missouri–Kansas City Department of Theatre as Professor of Theatre Arts [http://cas.umkc.edu/theatre/about.html] . He now divides his time between Kansas City and London, where he has directed at Shakespeare’s
Globe Theatre , including a ground-breaking all-female production of Richard III (2003).Publications
