"Klingsor's Last Summer" is a novel by Hermann Hesse. The year 1919 was in many ways a cut in Hermann Hesse's life. His first wife, Maria Bernoulli, had a nervous breakdown and was taken to hospital with no prospect of recovery. In May Hesse moved from Bern to Ticino, where he found a new home in the Casa Camuzzi in Montagnola. In July, he met the singer and painter Ruth Wenger, whom he married in 1924.

All these circumstances, the newly gained freedom, the new love, but especially the climatically favoured area made his first year in Ticino one of the most exuberant periods in his life, spending time with painting, writing poetry and visiting the local wine taverns.

In July and August, in a few weeks Hesse wrote Klingsor's Last Summer. In December 1919 it was published the first time in the Deutsche Rundschau, followed by an omnibus volume with "Kinderseele" and "Klein und Wagner" by Samuel Fischer.Protagonist of the story is the painter Klingsor.
