Cortese made his 125cc World Championship with Kiefer-Bos-Castrol Honda in 2005, he finished the season in 26th place with 8 points. His best finish was 14th place in German GP, Czech GP, and Turkish GP. But for 2006, he switch to the 2005 125cc Championship-Wining team, the Elit - Caffè Latte which is also on Honda machineries. He partnered 2005 125cc World Champion Thomas Lüthi. He made steady progress scoring some mid-field championship points, His best result was in the Portuguese GP in 10th place and improved in the standings to 17th place with 23pts.

Cortese enjoyed the season, but occurred little changes around him for 2007, which his team became Emmi - Caffè Latte, switched to Aprilia and Thomas Lüthi move to 250cc also used Aprilia. But when testing in Spain, he found out his new Aprilia is totally different from his 2006 Honda. But he made an even better progress, finishing most fo the season's race in the top 10 including 7th places in the French GP, and his home races in the Italian GP and German GP. He finished the championship in 14th place with 66 points. This improvement caused him to use an official Aprilia RSA 125 for 2008.

Cortese, just like Valentino Rossi had never missed a race since his bebut way back in 2005.
