William McKenzie, Baron McKenzie of Luton

William David McKenzie, Baron McKenzie of Luton (Bill McKenzie) (born 24 July 1946) in an English Labour politician, since January 2007, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions

Life

Born in 1946, the son of Donald and Elsie May McKenzie, "née" Doust, he was educated at the University of Bristol where he graduated with a BA in Economics and Accounting. He qualified as a professional accountant and began his accountacy career at Martin Rata and Partners as an articled clerk. He moved to Price Waterhouse in 1973 and worked for them in many locations, including London, Hong Kong and Vietnam up to 1998. he became a partner of Price Waterhouse in the UK from 1980 to 1986. He married Diana Joyce Angliss in 1972 and lives in Luton. He states his recreations as swimming, reading and music.

Political career

He was an elected member of Luton Borough Council from 1976 to 1992 then again from 1999 to 2005, following a spell in the far east, and was leader until May 2003. He covered a number of roles during his Council service, particularly relating to local governance finance. He was also Chairman of London Luton Airport.

He unsuccessfully contested Luton South in 1987 and 1992.

Bill McKenzie was an adviser to Labour’s Shadow Treasury team for a number of years, and was a member of the original Fabian Society Taxation Review Committee. He was created a life peer in 2004 and served as a Lord in Waiting and Government Spokesperson in the House of Lords for Treasury and Industry issues from 2005 to 2007.

Lord McKenzie was appointed as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions in January 2007. Among his ministerial responsibilities are health and safety at work and the Health and Safety Executive.
