Jonathan Keith Smart (born
September 21 ,1964 inBaton Rouge, Louisiana ) is an American formerbasketball player and current coach. He is best remembered for hitting the game-winning shot in the 1987 NCAA championship game. The shot gave theIndiana Hoosiers a 74-73 victory over the Syracuse Orangemen. He transferred to Indiana from Garden City Community College in Kansas where he was a two year standout and Jayhawk Conference Player of the Year.After two seasons at Indiana, Smart was signed by the
San Antonio Spurs , where he played two games in the 1988-89 season. Smart was more successful in the CBA where he played six seasons before retiring in 1995. Smart also played for theHalifax Windjammers of theWorld Basketball League in the early 1990s, and one season with the WBL'sWorcester Counts in 1989.Smart also played in the
Philippines , with theSan Miguel Beermen of thePhilippine Basketball Association , in the 1989 Reinforced Conference.In 2002, Smart finished the season as interim coach of the
Cleveland Cavaliers . His record was 9-31 with the club. Currently, Smart is an assistant coach with theGolden State Warriors .External links
