St Joseph's Catholic High School

St Joseph's was a Catholic secondary school located in Sontley Road, Wrexham. The school's Headteacher is Mr John Kenworthy and there were four houses: Hannon, Mostyn, Petit and Vaughn. The school introduces some new topics that are different from primary school like French, German and Drama. Every lesson takes about 1 hour.

In 2006 St Joseph's became a joint Anglican-Roman Catholic school. This move met with opposition from a group called Concerned Catholics, because they thought this would lead to a dilution of Cayjolic teaching, though the Anglican Church agreed to use the Catholic RE syllabus. The Catholic objectors have complained to Rome about this issue and presented a petition.

Now it is a joint catholic and anglican school, the forms have changed to Romero, Cassidy, Devereux, Kolbe, and King. The newest form is King, which was added to cope with the load of children arriving now because it is a joint school. Year 7 and 8 have King in them as a form, but Year 9, 10 and 11 have not.

Other issues of concern are that methods of contraception are taught in the school, (the school has always taught what happens in the real world) and Anglican female priests can conduct joint assemblies of worship.(This has not yet happened- in fact the first year had no Anglican Eucharist at all and the Anglican chaplain is a man.) Concerned Catholics believes that no Catholic who values the Catholic Church as Christ's Church can in good conscience send their child to such a school. (But there are so many applying to the school from both Churches that some of each are bound to be turned away. The Head says that the Anglican pupils are confident and articulate in their faith.)

They have an outstanding P.T.A. Their joint chairs are Paul Crump and Helen Zammit-Willson. They organise events to raise extra funds for the school, such as computers, equipment etc.

SPORTS

The Year 10 football team are very sucsessful winning 3 league titles in years 7, 8, and 9.#

Controversy

St Josephs although has been mired in controversy, with Black children being picked on and being fundamentalist in its following of the christian faith. The Headteacher John Kenworthy has been reported to the local LEA by at least once by a parent for his bullying punishments that are hannded out.
