Unman, Wittering and Zigo

Unman, Wittering and Zigo

Unman, Wittering and Zigo is a 1958 radio play by the British writer Giles Cooper. Written to put across Cooper's dislike of the public schools system in place at the time, the play is based around a school where a master has just been killed. The main character is the school master who takes over, John Ebony. The play is all about him learning the class' secrets and how it affects his relationship with his wife, Nadia. This play has been seen as effective and was considered to be one of Cooper's best works, resulting in it being used currently for GCSE and Standard Grade English coursework in the United Kingdom.

In 1965, the author adapted the work as a television drama which was broadcast in the Theatre 625 series on BBC2. A feature film version, directed by John Mackenzie, was released in
1971. The 1971 film, which featured actors including David Hemmings and a young Michael Kitchen, is also currently used for educational purposes in the UK.

A reference to the play is made in the popular British TV series, Little Britain, in which a school master finishes the morning roll call with "Unman, Wittering and Zigo absent".
