Thomas Stonor, 7th Baron Camoys

(Ralph) Thomas Campion George Sherman Stonor, 7th Baron Camoys GCVO DL (born 16 April 1940) was Lord Chamberlain of the United Kingdom from 1998 to 2000, when he retired due to ill health. He followed David George Patrick Coke Ogilvy, 13th Earl of Airlie and was succeeded by Baron Luce. He became the 7th Baron Camoys on 8 March 1976.

Biography

Lord Camoys was made a GCVO 1998, and a Privy Counsellor in the same year. He was a Deputy Lieutenant of Oxfordshire from 1993. He received the Order of Gorkha Dadshina Baku 1st Class (of Nepal) in 1981.

He was a Lord in Waiting 1992–97, and has been a Permanent Lord in Waiting since 2000.

The Honourable Thomas Stonor was educated at Eton College and Balliol College University of Oxford (MA). He was later to have an active role in banking. He was General Manager and a director of National Provincial and Rothschild (London) Ltd 1968, and Managing Director of Rothschild Intercontinental Bank Ltd 1969. He was Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Amex Bank Ltd 1975–77, and Chairman 1977–78. He was Deputy Chairman of Barclay de Zoete Wedd (BZW) from 1987, having been its Chief Executive 1986–88. Since 1993, he has been Deputy Chairman of Sotheby's, and was Chairman of Jackson of Piccadilly 1968–85. He was associated with Barclays Merchant Bank, serving as its Managing Director from 1978–84, and as executive Vice-Chairman 1984–86. He was also a director of Barclays Bank International Ltd 1980–94, Mercantile Credit Co Ltd 1980–84, National Provident Institution from 1982, the Administrative Staff College from 1989, and 3i Group from 1991.

He was President of the Mail Users' Association from 1977–84, and a member of the Court of Assistants of the Fishmongers Company from 1980. He served the latter livery company as Prime Warden 1992–93.

Lord Camoys was a member of the House of Lords select committee on the European Economic Community (EEC) 1979–81, and a member of the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England 1985–87 and the Royal Commission on Historic Manuscripts 1987–94.

He was a consultor of the Extraordinary Session of the Administration of Patrimony of the Holy See from 1991. He was the first Roman Catholic Lord Chamberlain since the Reformation.

Lord Camoys' ancestral home is Stonor Park, Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.

Marriage

The seventh Baron married Elisabeth Mary Hyde Parker, daughter of Sir William Stephen Hyde Parker, Bt, in 1966. The couple has the following issue:

*Honorable Alina Mary Stonor (b. 1967). She married Simon Barrowcliff in 1994, and has three children.

*Honorable Emily Mary Julia Stonor (b. 1969). She married in 2006 the John David James Dalrymple, 14th Earl of Stair (b. 1961), himself eldest son of the late Earl by his wife Davina Bowes-Lyon, of the family of the earls of Strathmore and Kinghorne, and is now styled The Countess of Stair.

*Hon. Sophie Ulla Stonor (b. 29 Sep 1971). She married the Honorable James Stourton, the youngest son of the 26th Baron Mowbray, in 1993.
